When we were little and we (me, my brother, and my cousins) would go places with my Grandma Darlene we would always sing Rocky Top by The Osborne Brothers. It's one of my favorite childhood memories. We would play it on the eight track player in her car every time we drove anywhere. We would beg her to play it over and over again. I loved it and will forever have the words memorized. It's one of the songs on my play list. It wasn't until recently that I really listened to this song. This song that I have had the words memorized to since I was 7 is about drinking.
I have to laugh at myself for not seeing it sooner but I was looking at it through the eyes of a child.
"Once two strangers climbed on rocky top,
Lookin for a moonshine still.
Strangers aint come back from rocky top,
Guess they never will."
I thought that this meant that they couldn't see the moon because the mountain was so high. When they never came back I thought they were lost. This made perfect sense to my 2nd grade brain.
"Corn wont grow at all on rocky top,
Dirts too rocky by far.
Thats why all the folks on rocky top
Get their corn from a jar."
Again this made perfect sense. Corn won't grow, of course not I've never seen corn on a mountain, have you? I assumed that the jar they meant was like canned corn. I figured they just called it a jar because it had been canned at home. Or that since it was an old song that was just what they use to call cans.
I just think it's hilarious that all my cousins and I were riding around with my Grandma in her Buick listening to the eight track tape singing this drinking song at the top of our lungs. It must have seemed like a pretty strange picture to people who saw us.
I had a friend/co-worker in college who use to think that a certain dirty song from the 80's went:
All I want to do is make cookies with you.
Chocolate Chip and Oatmeal too.
This also makes me laugh hysterically when I think about him singing this.
I suppose that's how you deal with songs that your kids hear that have inappropriate lyrics. I'm concerned that I won't be able to think fast enough to do this when my kids hear some of the awful songs on the radio these days. Songs on the radio now are not nearly as subtle as these two. I'm going to have to get very creative with my rhyming skills. I love music and listen to the radio a lot I hate that I may have to stop to avoid having to discuss sex with my two year old. I'm not a supporter of censorship but isn't there some sort of decency standard that should be met. I don't have a problem with lewd songs on an album, hey I even like some of them, but I don't think they belong on the radio.
Thanks for reading.
