I just can't help but get on my soap box a little about the new plan to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell".
I'm waiting, not so patiently, to see what the new ingenious solution is to gays in the military. So far I feel like no one has addressed the serious problems that repealing DADT creates. All I've heard is about gay rights, discrimination and stopping the discharges of gay service men and women. I don't argue that there is discrimination in the system I just don't see how they plan to cure it, a simple repeal isn't going to cover it. There are logistical issues here that are being completely overlooked. Where, for example, are you going to house openly gay service members? Seems to me both the men's and women's barracks would be out. Can't really put them in their own barracks.
Then there is the safety issue. Military members rely on one another for protection in extremely dangerous situations. When was the last time you literally put your life in the hands of your coworkers? Would you trust them? Completely? Like it or not homophobia is a reality that infects our nation and our US military. These are not things I want the people on our front lines thinking about in critical situations.
I don't think DADT is a great solution it's just the only one I can see that seems even remotely feasible. Politicians trot this out as if they are going to say, "Now openly gay people can serve in the military." Simple, change made, everybody happy. It's a show for parts of their constituency that will like such legislation and pays no attention to the actual circumstances that such a change would create. Tell me you'll cut my taxes while spending more money too, I'll buy it. Why not.
We'll see what happens. I like to think the leaders of our country are smarter then me or at least have access to people who are smarter then me, perhaps I underestimate their powers for solving difficult problems. I hope nothing I've said has offended anyone that's never my intent. These are just my humble opinions.
Thanks for reading.

whew, it is a very touchy situation. plus, if gays get to sleep with their preferred "sex" why don't straight guys get to sleep with women, etc. to me the answer is the Bible and that being gay is against God's will...but that is also much easier said...that done.
ugh, I'm with you. Why can't we treat it like any other sin--it's your personal business, you will make your own choices, you shouldn't be attacked, but we don't need to make special legislation or circumstances to accommodate you.
But our gov't is getting bigger and bigger and we the people are the ones allowing it. When we want 'Big Brother' to take care of us, we forfeit our rights to not have their nose in every aspect of our personal business, I guess.
